Progressive Home Insurance Review

Progressive home insurance has both traditional and unique offerings for its customers, ranging from its proprietary Name Your Price tool to superior accessibility and support. However, its claim customer service is not as good as it could be.

In this Progressive Insurance review, we look at what we like about the company, what could be improved, and how it compares to its competitors. We also discuss Progressive's use of our proprietary CompareScore.

What we like about Progressive homeowners insurance

There's a lot to like about Progressive's home insurance products, but we'll try to limit ourselves to just a few highlights. Progressive's Name Your Price tool, HomeQuote Explorer tool, and available discounts, in particular, make it an excellent choice for home insurance.

Name Your Price tool

Customers from virtually any financial background can find a policy that fits their budget thanks to Progressive's Name Your Price tool. Customers use the online tool to enter some basic information, receive possible rates, and enter the price they want to pay. Progressive will then present coverage options that meet the customer's specific requirements. Customers can then choose the policy that best fits their budget and customize it based on the amount of coverage they require.

HomeQuote Explorer tool

Progressive is currently the only insurance company that allows customers to compare home insurance rates and coverage from multiple providers. Customers must first enter their basic information into this simple web-based tool in order to receive a personalized quote. Progressive then allows customers to compare their quote to rates and coverages from other insurance companies side by side. Customers can choose the policy that best meets their needs by working with one of Progressive's agents or by seeking an underwriter from the carrier that offers the best rate.

Available discounts

You've probably heard Flo's trademark phrase, "There's a discount for that!" Progressive offers one of the most comprehensive selections of available discounts for homeowners to apply to their policies. The following are just a few of the additional ways Progressive prioritizes its customers' budgets:

  • Discount on Multi-Policy Bundles
  • Discount on Alarm Systems and Safety Services
  • Discounted Quote in Advance
  • New Home Discount
  • Pay in Full Discount
  • Discount on Electronic Documents
  • Discount on New Home Construction

Who should get this policy

Progressive home insurance policies are an excellent option for almost any homeowner. However, because of the availability of new home and new home construction discounts, homeowners who have recently purchased or are planning to build a new home may benefit the most from a Progressive policy. Furthermore, if you already have a Progressive auto policy, bundling it with a homeowners insurance policy can help you save even more money on your coverage needs.

Things to consider

Before making a major purchase, it's critical to read the fine print and understand what you're getting into. While Progressive's products are extremely user-friendly and affordable, there are a few things that homeowners should think about before joining Team Flo.

Discounts depend on location

Certain discounts and coverages may not be available depending on where you live in the United States. Other than using the Name Your Price and HomeQuote Explorer tools, there is no easy way to find out if you live in an area that isn't eligible for specific discounts. To find out if you qualify for specific discounts and coverage options in your area, simply fill out your information and receive a personalized quote.

Who shouldn’t get this policy

If you're looking for a one-stop shop for all of your home insurance needs, including underwriting and claims processing, you'll have to look elsewhere. Progressive primarily serves as a middleman, not underwriting its own policies or allowing customers to file claims directly with the carrier. Those who want to have all of their insurance needs met under one roof should look for coverage from another provider.

What we analyzed

Our team compared Progressive to the competition by looking at available discounts, coverage options, customer satisfaction, support, and accessibility.

Discounts

Progressive offers some of the most comprehensive discounts available. The following discounts are available:

  • Discount for multiple policies
  • Discount on Alarm Systems and Safety Devices
  • Discounted Quote in Advance
  • New Purchase Discount
  • Pay in Full Discount
  • Discount on Electronic Documents
  • Discount on New Home Construction

Customers can also use Progressive's exclusive contractor network to save money on needed repairs as a result of an insurance claim.

Coverage

Progressive's standard home insurance policy includes the following coverages:

  • Dwelling Protection
  • Other Structures
  • Personal Property
  • Loss of Use
  • Personal Liability
  • Medical Payments

Progressive doesn't have a lot of options when it comes to extra coverages. They do, however, provide a water backup coverage option that can help cover water damage caused by backed-up sump pumps and sewer systems. Personal injury protection is also available from the company for unusual but costly lawsuits.

Customer satisfaction

Progressive has a high customer satisfaction rating when compared to other insurance companies in the industry. Progressive received an 809 out of 1,000 satisfaction rating in JD Power's 2019 U.S. Home Insurance Study. This puts them well ahead of competitors such as Nationwide, Travelers, Liberty Mutual, and MetLife, all of whom scored between 750 and 800 on the customer satisfaction scale.

Support

In addition to its customer service hotline, Progressive provides additional avenues for customers to obtain answers to their home insurance questions. Policyholders can start a chat with Flo using the online tool, or they can send an email with their issue. They can also use the Progressive App to connect to available agents and customer service representatives as quickly as possible. For quick answers to common questions, the Progressive Answers online platform offers a plethora of frequently asked questions and their helpful responses, allowing users to quickly and easily obtain the information they require.

Accessibility

The Progressive website is very user-friendly, with a detailed description of each available product, as well as corresponding discounts and online quote tools. Customers can easily obtain a quote online using the web-based quote tool, and the HomeQuote Explorer tool allows them to compare rates across providers. Progressive, on the other hand, does not allow policyholders to manage their policies or file claims directly with the carrier. Claims must be submitted separately through the third-party claims processor, which may cause some customers concern.

Progressive home insurance vs. the competition

We've compiled a list of three other insurance carriers that offer homeowners insurance products to give you a better idea of how Progressive compares to their competitors. We compared their discounts, coverage options, accessibility, customer satisfaction, and support to Progressive's offerings to see where they stood.

Great for customer service – Amica

Amica Mutual has a low CompareScore for discounts, only a 2 out of 5, but a high CompareScore for customer service, a 4 out of 5.

Amica is one of the best carriers available, with over 100 years of experience in the home insurance industry. However, the company does not provide insurance in Hawaii, and its available discounts pale in comparison to Progressive's extensive selection of low-cost options.

Great for discount options – Farmers

Farmers receive a 5 out of 5 for discount options and a 4 out of 5 for support and accessibility.

Farmers home insurance is a poor choice for those who value customer service when compared to Progressive. While Farmers' customer service leaves something to be desired, its flexible coverage options make it an appealing option for those looking for specific coverages.

Great for accessibility – Geico

The primary focus of Geico is not home insurance. In fact, J.D. Power does not rate this insurance company. However, it receives a 5 out of 5 CompareScore for support and accessibility.

Geico is one of the most affordable options on the market and one of Progressive's main competitors. With low-cost products and excellent customer service, the company is a strong competitor to Progressive's offerings.

Progressive’s home insurance rates

Progressive's premiums, like all homeowners insurance rates, are determined by your geographic location, the age of your home, claims history, and the breadth of coverage requested, to name a few factors. According to the company's website, the average annual cost of Progressive homeowners insurance for a 12-month policy ranged from $676 to $2,044 in 2019. The location of your home has the greatest impact on insurance premiums. Arizona, Delaware, Washington, D.C., Kentucky, Maine, Nevada, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, and West Virginia are the least expensive states for coverage.

Progressive online and mobile app

Progressive's online and mobile app user experiences are unrivalled for informational purposes. Each offers detailed information about the company's offerings as well as how customers can save the most money on their coverage needs. If, on the other hand, you're looking for a company that offers policyholders unique ways to manage their policies and file claims, you might want to keep looking. Progressive does not currently allow customers to manage their policies or file claims online or through their mobile app.

Progressive renters, auto and life insurance

Progressive also offers renters, auto, and life insurance products in addition to homeowners insurance. Depending on the product you choose, you may be able to combine it with your homeowners insurance policy to save money on your coverage requirements.

Progressive renters insurance

Progressive renters insurance policies are specifically designed to protect tenants from unexpected expenses such as medical bills for someone else's injuries or temporary living expenses due to forced eviction. Customers can create the policy that works best for them by selecting the coverages that make the most sense for their specific situation, resulting in a truly personalized policy.

Progressive life insurance

Customers can select from Progressive's wide range of available life insurance policies to protect the financial well-being of their families in the event that they die. Term life insurance, whole life insurance, universal life insurance, and final expense insurance are currently available from the company. Benefits range from $50,000 to more than $1 million, and beneficiaries can receive payments even if policyholders live past the age of 100!

Progressive auto insurance

For good reason, more than 20 million drivers in the United States are enrolled in Progressive's auto insurance coverage. The company provides a wide range of discounts, including its Safe Driving discount, which offers personalized savings based on the driver's behaviors. Customers simply install a Progressive monitor in their vehicle to begin saving money on their auto insurance policies based on their driving habits.

Bundling options

Customers can bundle and save on their coverage needs by having a unified policy for their home and auto coverage needs when they have more than one policy with Progressive. Policyholders can also choose to have a single deductible across their bundle, which will save them even more money on their coverage. Bundling policies save Progressive customers an average of 12%.

Progressive in the news

  • Progressive and Whole Foods will collaborate in November 2020 to provide customers with "turkey insurance" for their Thanksgiving nightmares. Customers are protected from "eating a bad meal" under the program if they are enrolled in the insurance, have their Whole Foods Market receipt, and a picture and explanation of what went wrong to cause their Turkey Day failure.
  • Progressive also collaborated with SimpleNexus to give app users access to home insurance options. SimpleNexus is a mortgage app that has helped 3 million borrowers connect with available lenders for their mortgage needs. Customers can now use the app to find available Progressive home insurance coverage for their new home purchases.
  • Following the COVID-19 pandemic, Progressive announced a 10-percentage-point reduction in auto insurance rates. However, as businesses began to reopen and employees returned to work, Progressive reversed its auto insurance reductions, resulting in an average increase of 4% in customers' insurance premiums. While this was not the news that many policyholders were hoping to hear, they can still save 6% on their coverage through the initial reduction.
